After purchasing the property two years ago, they decided to start again and re-build, taking their time to create a breath-taking home that is now completely illuminated by daylight. What’s amazing is that thanks to our bespoke products, the family didn’t have to compromise at all, and every detail and material has been hand-picked so it’s just as they desired.
We spoke with Marlene, who described the task in great detail and discussed how pleased the family was with the end result.
Marlene, tell us a little bit about the origins of your home and why you decided to renovate?
“The house is from the 1960s and nothing has been done to it, so it didn’t fulfil all the needs that we had for a house, but we could see the potential. We decided to invest a lot in daylight and in the right windows, because that creates the home. Being in a house where you get natural daylight just makes you happier - we were looking at the market to find some roof windows which could match our criteria. We went to the Vario by VELUX homepage and could see there was a rooflight configurator which allowed us to construct how the windows would look in our design.”
How important was the positioning of your new rooflight windows in order to maximise the daylight in your home? And what difference has it made?
“It’s not a matter of putting [daylight] everywhere, as that wouldn’t give it the right effect. It’s finding the right spaces and the right spots for it where it really has an impact. We put two windows in the long hallway on the first floor and if you go upstairs there’s a window at each end. If we didn’t have light, it would be very dark so [the design] gave us what we were looking for.
“It was important for us to be able to create a tunnel effect, so in the summer days when it’s hot, we can open the windows in the hallway and get some of the hot air out. You can actually feel it down in the kitchen area when you get the fresh air inside.”
“There’s also the bathroom, but we didn’t want a big window in there because we like to be private, so we used it in the ceiling to have the light but still make it a private bathroom. Both in the bathroom and hallway, we are able to open the windows and that was very important for us because renovating a house that is well insulated will mean that in the summertime it can get hot.”
Why was it important to have a Vario by VELUX rooflight and how did you feel during the installation process?
“The day when we had the Vario by VELUX windows installed was very exciting, it was a feeling of yes, now we’re getting there and straight away we could see the effect of getting the window inside even though the walls were bare and it wasn’t painted yet, but it gave us a totally different light inside the house.”
“The first thing I see every morning when I go inside the bathroom is the light coming through and onto the walls. The other day we had a full moon just looking through the window and the kids were in the bath playing, while watching the full moon and that was very special.”
What lasting impact has your beautiful Vario by VELUX rooflight had on your home?
“You’re always very close to nature, as you can always see the sun and the skies or can hear the rain and that makes it a really nice feeling also. I think Vario by VELUX has helped make it come together and it’s all the details in this house that has made it special, we wouldn’t be able to do that without having the extra daylight so it’s an important part of the whole project.”
“My best advice when doing this kind of project is to be patient and to be thorough. Look at all the possibilities and look at how you’re going to use the house now and in five years, remember to make the house ready for the future.”
